The Toronto Star
History of The Toronto Star
In 1892 Toronto was a bustling city of 180,000 with six newspapers competing for readers when a seventh daily, a self-styled “Paper for the People”, suddenly appears on the streets. Born on November 3, 1892, The Evening Star had been created almost overnight by 21 printers and four teenage apprentices who were locked out during a labour dispute at the afternoon News. Their aim was to publish a serious journal - and possibly to teach the News a lesson. Little did they realize that their bright new four-page sheet would grow into Canada’s largest daily newspaper, The Toronto Star.
The Toronto Star Today
In 1993, The Star completed construction of a new production facility, The Toronto Star Press Centre, located in Vaughan, just north of Toronto. The Press Centre houses six MAN Roland presses and its extensive capacity has allowed for the use of full colour throughout the newspaper every day for both editorial and advertising purposes. And this year, the company completed its expansion of the colour capacity from 28 pages to 48 pages to meet the colour demands of our advertisers and readers.
In 1999, The Toronto Star joined together with four other major newspapers in Southern Ontario to form the Torstar Daily Newspaper Group. The Star is published seven days a week in the Greater Toronto Area and is a division of the Torstar Media Group which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Torstar Corporation.
Globe and Mail
A history of The Globe and Mail
The history of The Globe begins in Toronto in 1843 with the arrival of George Brown. In August, 1843, Brown and his father established The Banner, a four-page weekly designed to promote the interests of the Presbyterian Church; but the younger Brown had more secular aims, and founded The Globe on March 5,1844, as a political vehicle. It began as a weekly with a circulation of 300, and by Oct. 1,1853, had become a daily with a circulation of 6,000.
In 1936, the paper (with a circulation of 78,000) was sold to a young financier named George McCullagh. Mr. McCullagh acquired The Mail and Empire (circulation 118,000) a few weeks later, and absorbed it into The Globe under the new name, The Globe and Mail. (The Mail had been established by Conservative backers in 1872, at the urging of Sir John A. Macdonald, to counter the influence of Brown’s Globe, and had merged with another Conservative paper, The Empire, in 1895.)
In 1967, Report on Business appeared on a daily basis (with The Globe and Mail), becoming Canada’s first national daily business newspaper.
In 1979, The Globe became the first newspaper in the world to produce a full text commercial data base containing every story from each issue (dating back to 1977), and the first to publish electronically and in print on the same day.
The Globe and Mail underwent a major redesign in 1990, both graphically and editorially, beginning with the issue dated June 12. It was as part of this redesign that the newspaper’s editorial style book was completely revised and first published in its current form, and that The Globe produced its first visual style guide.
In both 1995 and 1996, the Society of Newspaper Design named The Globe and Mail the World’s Best Designed Newspaper.
